Paper Valentines are the Best!

St. Valentine’s Day has been celebrated on February 14th since 496 AD.  The day was initially named for one or more Christian martyrs.  (Though deleted by the Catholic Church, in 1969, by Pope Paul VI, from the General Roman Calendar of Saints according to Wikipedia.)

The first association with romantic love and Valentine’s Day is attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer when he wrote, in 1382, “Parlement of Foules” which translated states “For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”

Victorian Valentines were treasured pieces of art which were made by hand using tissue, satin, lace, colored inks, embossed hearts and flowers, feathers, pearls, beads, etc. and often included poems and professions of love for recipients.

In the early 19th century. paper valentines became so popular that they were assembled in factories, according to Wikipedia.  Today, according to Wikipedia and the US Greeting Card Association, it’s estimated 190 million Valentine’s are sent each year and 15 million e-valentines were sent in 2010.

While Valentine’s Day is also celebrated with gifts of flowers, candy, jewelry, and a wide-range of other tokens of affection, we still think Paper Valentine’s are the best!!  These special handmade treasures can take hours to make and truly set the holiday apart from other commercial holidays where gifts are purchased in minutes with very little thought or originality.  Go ahead and send off an e-Valentine or a purchased Valentine to your friends and family members, but for that special love in your life we suggest you take some time to assemble a special handmade card using homemade papers, embossed and cut papers, lace, satin, and beads accompanied with your own, unique words describing your feelings of love.

Handy Tip FYI:  Super Glue Corporation even has a terrific paper friendly super glue for you to use to ensure your collage items stay attached for years to come.  The Accutool is one super glue product that actually bonds to paper far outperforming traditional white glues and glue sticks!

Teachers Rock!

It still seems like summer to us, but we know of several schools (here in California and elsewhere, too) that have already started the new school year.

We just want to say “TEACHERS ROCK”!  So many hours are spent by teachers every year decorating classrooms and preparing lesson plans, usually on shoestring budgets.  It is awe-inspiring how much love and time is dedicated to making learning fun, rewarding, motivating, and enjoyable for our young people.

While perusing clever blogs we came across this nifty summertime theme for a school library:  “Make A Splash READ“.  In it the author describes making these hanging fish:

“All you need to do is cut out a triangle from the edge of the plate to serve as the mouth and then glue or tape that triangle to the back of the fish for a tail.”

White glue or The Original Super Glue’s Accutool would work great for this project.  We also suggest the whole line of sticky tape and dots we have in our Front Porch Treasures(R) line of scrapbooking products.

Accutool + Tea Bag = Fingernail Fix

Weather, water, health and lots of other issues can cause fingernails to be brittle and crack or tear.  Super Glue Corporation’s own Susie M. recently had a nail tear stretching horizontally across her nail.  She remembered reading about a quick fingernail fix in Real Simple magazine a few years back so she decided to give it a try.  The result was terrific!  Here’s her testimonial:

“I was reading a magazine from a few years ago about a quick fingernail fix.  They said to cut a small piece of an unused tea bag and place it over the fingernail tear then apply nail glue over it.  Once the glue is dry file it down to a smooth finish.  I tried it yesterday using the Accutool and it worked GREAT!  My fingernail had torn about half way (right to left).  The Accutool was perfect because I was able to control the drop of glue so well.  Also, for added support I repeated the process under my nail bed.  So far the fix seems to be better than when the nail salon has fixed a tear.  Their fix was always on the weak side and didn’t last very long.  My nail is as good as new!”

Hey, thanks for the great tip, Susie!!  The precision and pin-point accuracy provided by the Accutool makes it the perfect super glue product for this application.  Additionally, the fact that the dispenser stands up on its own makes it a handy desktop accessory for  professional nail technicians as well.  This video shows the Accutool in action:
