This versatile adhesive can be used in multiple ways, and its everyday uses, fingerprint identifying ability, and car holding strength make it an astonishing substance. But have you ever stopped to think how this glue actually works? Let’s have a look at all the sticky details.

The Bonding Basics

Super Glue (cyanoacrylate) is a one part instant setting adhesive. Cyanoacrylate bonds rapidly, but it needs the ions that are found in water to do the trick. So all we need is water to active the product. Conveniently enough, water is found all around us. The humidity in the air and on the part to be bonded is all you need to get the chemical reaction.

After coming into contact with water, cyanoacrylate adhesives undergo a process called anionic polymerization. Here, a chemical reaction causes the cyanoacrylate molecules to form chains (polymers) that create a strong mesh and almost instantly join bonded surfaces together.

The rapid bonding time is why it’s important to keep the glue container properly sealed as much as possible. If you don’t, the moisture will cause the chemical reaction that makes the adhesive harden.

The adhesive sticks fingers together because the skin naturally contains moisture that causes the chemical reaction to form a bond, but Removing Super Glue is not as difficult as you might imagine.

Acetone acts as the adhesive’s “Kryptonite,” weakening and breaking down the strong bonds. Simply apply a small amount of acetone, which is commonly found in nail polish removers, to the glued area.

After it has been applied, gently peel the layer of glue away. It’s important to know that if it is on your skin to avoid pulling the layer of glue abruptly, to avoid damaging your skin.
