Jonathan Franzen, bestselling author of one of the top ten best books of 2010, Freedom, uses super glue as part of his writing process!

In a Time Magazine interview, the great contemporary novelist, Jonathan Franzen describes the discipline he used to write his latest novel, Freedom.   He writes six to seven days a week beginning at 7 a.m. in the morning.  He works in a rented office that is void of any distractions.  Using an old Dell laptop computer, Franzen “performs his dialogue out loud as he writes it” to the point of often becoming hoarse by the end of the day.

According to the Time Magazine article, “Because Franzen believes you can’t write serious fiction on a computer that’s connected to the internet, he not only removed the Dell’s wireless card but also permanently blocked its Ethernet port.”

“What you have to do,” he explains, “is you plug in an Ethernet cable with superglue, and then you saw off the little head off it.”  [Blogger’s note:  We’re glad this worked for Mr. Franzen, but we do NOT recommend you try this at home!]

Franzen also doesn’t take vacations.  But he is known to take birdwatching breaks.

Well, we say, whatever works!  Franzen’s compelling novel about a St. Paul, Minnesota family named Berglund, headed by a 3M Executive father and a housewife mother along with their children explores life in the 21st century and has become one of the most highly acclaimed novels of our time.

We’re super glad super glue could help contribute in some small way! 🙂  Congratulations on the sticktoitiveness involved in your writing process, Jonathan Franzen!
