How to Make Scrabble Tile Drink Coasters

If you have ever used the Original Super Glue, you know it dries quickly and firmly once it has cured, making it a very popular adhesive for all sorts of crafts and DIY projects.

This ‘Scrabble’ tile drink coaster set is one of our favorite craft projects because it simply demonstrates how fast and easy it is to work with Super Glue.

Not only are these drink coasters fun to make, but they also make great gifts. As decorative accent pieces, this Scrabble tile coaster set will really add character to your game room or your coffee table.

Note: We’ve also seen this done with Dominoes, Dice, Mahjong Tiles, and old-fashioned checkers. Simply substitute the game piece used in any of these games with Scrabble tiles and you’ve put a new twist on an old classic. With a little patience and creativity, most gaming pieces can be found online for pennies and easily transformed with a little Super Glue.

Scrabble Tile Drink Coasters: Here’s What You Will Need

  • A 5.5” square piece of wood or tile to use as the base for your coaster
  • ⅛” to ½” thick Flat Cork sheeting (Note, you can also use wine corks the way we did in our January 2015 blog)
  • 36 Scrabble Tiles
  • The Original Super Glue
  • Ruler
  • Fine-Tip Permanent Marker
  • Some metal foil to cover your work surface

Making Your Scrabble Tile Coasters

  1. Take your metal foil, and use it to cover your work surface. This will keep any errant glue drips from sticking to your table.
  2. Next, carefully cut a piece of the cork backing the exact size and shape of your coaster base.
  3. Apply Super Glue to the coaster base.
  4. Firmly press the cork backing down onto the glue. Be sure to align the backing appropriately, as Super Glue dries quickly and firmly.
  5. Wait a few minutes for the glue to cure a bit, then turn your coaster over
  6. Now, we could end here and you’d have a perfectly functional coaster. And that’s fine if all you want to make is a plain coaster. Instead, we’re going to add some flair to these plain coasters by adding some gaming pieces. Scrabble tiles are probably the easiest, but you can use other gaming pieces as well. With a little imagination there’s no limit to the fun things you can create. For this, lay the Scrabble tiles out how you’d like them to be arranged on the coaster. If you like, find the right Scrabble tiles to spell out your name. Other ideas: spell out a few fun drinking words or simply go with a mish-mash of letters. It’s totally up to you.
  7. Place a small amount of Super Glue on the back of your first Scrabble tile, then place it in the top left corner of the front of your coaster. Continue until you’ve placed all the tiles (or dominoes, or dice) in the order you want.
  8. Let the coasters sit overnight to allow the adhesive to fully cure and by morning you can enjoy your new set of Scrabble tile drink coasters!

How to Make DIY Animal Fridge Magnets with Fix-All Adhesive

Fix-All Adhesive is a great all purpose glue that you can use on most at-home DIY projects. This Animal Fridge Magnet project is a great example of an inexpensive and super easy DIY home project that you can do alone or with kids.

These cute little critters can be used to mark chore charts, hold up grocery lists, or simply used to decorate a metal surface. No matter where you choose to place your animal magnets, you’re sure to have a blast making them.

Animal Fridge Magnets:
Here’s What You’ll Need

  • A few small, solid plastic animals. You can find these online or at most big-box stores. Note: If you find some hollow plastic animals that you’d like to use for this project, simply cut each animal in half and fill with air-dry clay. This will create a solid backing for your animal that you can then use to attach your magnet.
  • A box cutter or other sharp blade. As long as it has a straight edge, you should be good.
  • Magnets. You can use standard decorative ceramic magnets or you can spend a little extra on some smaller rare earth magnets.
  • Fix-All Adhesive
  • Optional: Spray paint. We like how these animals look once they’re coated with a little metallic gold or silver spray paint.
  • Optional: Plastic ‘Googly Eyes’. Make a fun project even more fun by adding a pair of ‘googly eyes’.
  • Finally, one brick of air-dry clay if you are using hollow plastic animals.

Making Your Magnets

  1. If you’re spray painting your plastic animals, now is the time to do so. Make sure they are completely dry before continuing. Note: Always work on a protected surface in a well-ventilated area when using spray paints or other aerosols.
  2. Once the animals have completely dried, carefully cut them in half using the smooth downward motions to avoid ragged edges.
  3. Clean up any rough edges with the knife.
  4. If you have hollow animal figurines, fill the insides with air-dry clay and set them out to harden up.
  5. Once you’ve done that, simply glue one of the magnets to each half of the animals and let dry.
  6. Optional: If you want to add a little touch of silliness, you can glue ‘googly eyes’ over the eyes on the figurine for an extra whimsical look.

Enjoy Your New Animal Fridge Magnets!

Be sure to place your fun animal magnets where they’ll be seen and adored! Of course, you can follow and apply the same steps using other objects that you think would make for an interesting magnet.

You can pick up a bag of extra Scrabble tiles and turn those into fridge magnets. They’re a fun way to pass the time while waiting for something on the stove to boil.

Whatever you decide to do with this ‘magnetic’ idea, the sky’s the limit!

If you’d like more ideas, be sure to check out the Original Super Glue Blog or just simply browse online for more great uses of our adhesive.

DIY Fur Ottoman: Simple Steps with Super Glue

March 18th, 2016

Super Glue is a crafty and resourceful way to revamp your home on the cheap. Its versatility lends it to endless possibilities—even transforming your furniture.

Follow these simple steps to make your own custom DIY fur ottoman for a chic update to any room:

1. Purchase a used or plain ottoman.

If you are planning on adding fur, simple is best. Used ottomans are perfect for projects like this: not only are they cheaper, but they also add character to your design for a truly unique piece. If you’re not an antique shopper, a plain ottoman will do just fine.

2. Remove the original fabric.

Strip down the ottoman to its bare bones. Once you’ve reached the cushioning, prepare your Super Glue. If the cushioning is too damaged, it may have to be replaced in order to achieve the look and feel that you desire. Fortunately, foam is very inexpensive and easy to find.

3. Prepare the fur and the glue.

Take precise measurements before cutting the length of your chosen fabric: you’ll want a continuous strip that covers the whole ottoman. Sheepskin rugs are also a great way to achieve the same effect without spending too much time and money.

Apply glue to the frame. Place the fabric over the top and make sure that it is properly secured. Trim the edges to your liking.

4. Let dry and enjoy!

Your ottoman is almost ready! You will want to let it dry for at least three days to ensure that the fabric has properly set. Once the fabric is securely attached, your ottoman is ready to enjoy.

DIY Ombre Necklace Organizer

Disorganized necklaces are like having none at all: you can either never find the one that you want, or it’s impossible for you to untangle them all.

Create a chic DIY ombre necklace rack with a little help from Super Glue, some basic crafting materials, and these simple steps:

-Long piece of wood
-Dowel, sawed into 1.5 inch pieces
-Super Glue
-Craft paint: one lighter and one darker hue in the color of your choice
-White craft paint
-Wood stain

1. Mix your paints, adding white paint as needed to create a gradient. Use scratch paper to test out each shade and mark the order. This step is key, as it is easy to mix up the colors. Once your order is decided, paint one peg in each color.

2. Stain the long piece of wood: first coat the stain on the wood, then wipe it with the cheesecloth.

3. Space the pegs out evenly, marking your desired positions with a marker. Use Super Glue to attach the painted pegs, and let the glue set.

4. Hang your handcrafted necklace rack using nails or wall adhesive.

If the wood is thick enough, you can even place photos and other decorations on top of it. Keep in mind that this is merely the simplest version: use additional colors or other creative ideas to make this project truly your own.

Creating a New Year’s ‘Wishing Wand’

December 31st, 2015

As people all over the world ring in the new year, they reflect upon the passing of time, yet celebrate the prospect of upcoming changes and fresh possibilities. Family and friends join in the festivities with confetti in hand and resolutions in mind. A great way to also involve little youngsters in the season’s merrymaking is by helping them create something fun and cute like this Wishing Wand craft. Using ZAP-A-GAP CA+ adhesive and a handful of materials, the Wishing Wand encourages kids to express some of the hopes and goals they have for their future, as you all start off the new year with some enjoyable family time.

What You’ll Need

  • Different colors of cardstock
  • A marker
  • An assortment of sequins, rhinestones, and other sparkly stuff
  • Scissors
  • A dowel or stick
  • Some curled ribbon or garland (optional)

The Crafty Countdown: Making the Wand

Like many other crafts, the first step to creating the wand is to prepare a suitable space for you and your child to work. Covering a surface with newspaper or an inexpensive tablecloth is a good idea, as things can get a little messy.

Next, grab the cardstock and scissors. You’ll need to make 2 different star pieces; the first one will be sort of the border of the wand and a place for your child to write their goals for the upcoming year. Star shapes can be tricky, so you can learn how to cut out a 5 point star hole with this tutorial.

Once the hollow star border is ready, get a different colored piece of cardstock to make the solid star shape that will display all the glittery bits. Trace the outline of the star border onto the fresh piece of cardstock and cut it out.

After both of the pieces have been prepared, use the ZAP-A-GAP CA+ to glue the star border to the front of the solid star. Then, have your child write a few of their wishes around the star border using a marker. Offering the opportunity to talk and to be creative, this often results in ideas that are unique and maybe even humorous.

Next, it’s time to add some sparkle and bedazzle. You can help your child adhere bigger, shiny pieces one-by-one using the Zap glue, or you can apply some adhesive to the star center and then let your child sprinkle the sequins and things all over the glued area.

When the glue has dried and the star sparkles to satisfaction, you’ll then need to attach the wand handle. Using the ZAP-A-GAP CA+ once again, adhere the selected handle piece to the back of the star. If you don’t want the connection spot to show, you can always glue another star-shaped piece of cardstock on top of it.

Lastly, once the handle is connected, add some colorful ribbon or a little bit of wired foil garland for a whimsical touch. Then you can enjoy the moment of watching your child wave in the year 2016 with their Wishing Wand in hand.

We Wish to Hear From You

Rustic Holiday Tree Topper Craft

November 23rd, 2015

Christmastime is swiftly approaching and will probably be here before you can say Old Saint Nick. All the hustle and bustle of the holiday is soon to be in full swing with loads of shopping, celebrating and decorating going on. For many people, the decorating aspect plays a major part of the merriness of the season, and it’s often even more fun when an element of creative crafting is added to the mix. If you’re looking to do a bit of DIY this year, here’s a simple tree topper craft that, with some help from Bondini Everything Gel, can spruce up your Christmas tree with a cute country flair.

What You Will Need

The rustic décor trend is still in style and going strong. Mason jars are being used in unique and surprising ways, and nature-inspired designs are beautifying many a shelf, mantel or dining room table. This rustic holiday tree topper falls right in line. Here’s what you’ll need to complete the craft:

  • Several long sticks
  • Jute twine
  • Chicken wire
  • Wire Cutters
  • Bondini Everything Gel
  • Heavy duty scissors or small garden shears
  • Artificial holly or poinsettias (optional)
  • Strands of lace (optional)

Steps To Making the Star Tree Topper

Creating your rustic tree topper first involves gathering sticks/branches from your yard or the outdoors. Look for sticks that are similar in terms of thickness. Once you’ve collected several, cut them into 10 pieces of the same length using smaller garden sheers or heavy duty scissors. For a good sized star, they should all be about 5 inches long. For an even larger tree topper, make them all 6 inches long.

After all the sticks have been cut, plan out a star, creating 5 outward points. When you are ready to glue, apply some Bondini Everything Gel and adhere the points one by one. This adhesive is ideal for dealing with materials from nature because it works well on dirty surfaces. It’s also able to fill in the gaps in between the sticks.

Once all 5 points have been glued and the gel has dried, use the adhesive to connect the remaining inward points and the shape of the star should all come together. Next, take the twine and wrap it around each connecting point several times.

After the star frame is ready, you’ll need to cut the chicken wire. This should be done with care, as the wire is sharp when cut. It can also be a bit tricky to cut the wire in the star shape. Trace the outline of the star onto the chicken wire, cut it out, and then adhere the shape to the star frame. Then trim the excess edges of the wire. Once that’s finished, your rustic tree topper is ready to adorn your tree with all its simplistic beauty.

Hint: If the topper is a bit too simple for your taste, go ahead and add a splash of festive fauna by attaching artificial poinsettias or holly sprigs in the chicken wire, or weave strands of white or ivory lace through the wire holes for a shabby chic touch.

What’s Your Christmas Craft Story?

The Ultimate Centerpiece Activity to Keep Your Kids Entertained During Thanksgiving

October 22nd, 2015
Pin It

Fall has arrived. Sure, it’s rather shocking that the year has flown by so fast, but it’s also the perfect time to start preparing for festive crafts for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday season. With the gathering of family and friends, the making of a delicious feast and the process of keeping children entertained, many people find that they have a whole lot on their plate — both figuratively and literally speaking.

However, with a little help from Super Glue, these pinecone turkey centerpiece craft ideas will provide kids (and adults) with a fun activity in between those heaping plates of food.

What You’ll Need

It’s a wonderful time for family to gather together, and what better way to really bring people together than with a craft time. This craft presents the great opportunity of going on a family nature walk and collecting the pinecones that are needed.

If you gather more than are used for the craft, you can always preserve the pinecones to make them last longer for Christmas time decorating ideas. Another option is simply purchasing them online or at your local craft store.

Additional Required Materials:

  • Crayons
  • Super Glue ACCUTOOL®
  • Cardstock
  • Scissors/kids scissors
  • Markers
  • Pom Poms (optional)
  • Wiggle eyes (optional)

Making The Turkey Day Treasures

Creative Crayon Holder

Using the pinecone as the body of a turkey, it’s super easy to make a cute, festive kiddie table topper and crayon holder. First, select a pinecone that has enough distance in between the scales to fit 4 or more crayons in a fanned out pattern, like feathers. Then remove the crayons.

Next, have the children create the face/neck and feet shapes out of the cardstock. Depending on the child’s age, this may require a little assistance from an adult. The figure 8 shape for the neck and the heart shape for the feet can be pre-drawn out for kids to color, decorate and then cut out. Otherwise, children can make their own pieces if they are able.

Once the shape is ready, for safety reasons parents should be the ones to use the ACCUTOOL® to glue them on. The precision applicator allows for a single drop to be dispensed, or continuous streams. To create the turkey, simply apply a few drops or a small stream to the base of the pinecone and then adhere the figure 8 cardstock shape. Once dry, grab the heart shaped piece and adhere to the bottom side of the pinecone for the turkey’s feet.

After the shapes have been glued on, all that’s left to do is put the crayons back in the pinecone. Not only is this turkey table topper simple for kids and parents to create, but it’s a craft that keeps on giving, offering children the fun of using their crayons and putting them back in their holder as they color and work on other activities at the kid’s table.

 Another Centerpiece Idea

If you’re looking for another centerpiece idea, try having the kids make pinecone turkeys that display what they are thankful for this year. This is a cute spin-off of a Thanksgiving thankful tree craft. Once again using the pinecone as the turkey’s body, have the children write down their blessings on cardstock strips or a cutout tracing of their hand.

Next, super glue the piece (or pieces) to the base of the pinecone. Create the turkey’s head out of a fluffy pom pom, wiggle eyes, and a cardstock mouth. This piece should be adhered more towards the tip of the cone. Once finished, this centerpiece craft is sure to make you smile as it displays the heartfelt, and sometimes amusing, things children are thankful for.

How Does Super Glue Work?

September 1st, 2015
Pin It

Super Glue TubeIt may come as no real surprise that Super Glue is an amazingly strong bonding adhesive. For many people, it has helped to repair a treasured  item or saved the day in a DIY project predicament.

This versatile adhesive can be used in multiple ways, and its everyday uses, fingerprint identifying ability, and car holding strength make it an astonishing substance. But have you ever stopped to think how this glue actually works? Let’s have a look at all the sticky details.

The Bonding Basics

Super Glue (cyanoacrylate) is a one part instant setting adhesive. Cyanoacrylate bonds rapidly, but it needs the ions that are found in water to do the trick. So all we need is water to active the product. Conveniently enough, water is found all around us. The humidity in the air and on the part to be bonded is all you need to get the chemical reaction.

After coming into contact with water, cyanoacrylate adhesives undergo a process called anionic polymerization. Here, a chemical reaction causes the cyanoacrylate molecules to form chains (polymers) that create a strong mesh and almost instantly join bonded surfaces together.

The rapid bonding time is why it’s important to keep the glue container properly sealed as much as possible. If you don’t, the moisture will cause the chemical reaction that makes the adhesive harden.

What Does Super Glue Work Best On?

Different projects require various types of adhesives in order to achieve the optimal result, but The Original Super Glue forms a strong bond on a variety of surfaces, such as:

• Ceramic
• Jewelry
• Aluminum
• Wood
• Metal
• Rubber
• And More!

What To Do in a Sticky Situation

The strength of this adhesive is certainly powerful. However, if you find yourself in a sticky situation where you accidentally glued an object to your skin or glued your fingers together, don’t panic.

The adhesive sticks fingers together because the skin naturally contains moisture that causes the chemical reaction to form a bond, but Removing Super Glue is not as difficult as you might imagine.

Acetone acts as the adhesive’s “Kryptonite,” weakening and breaking down the strong bonds. Simply apply a small amount of acetone, which is commonly found in nail polish removers, to the glued area.

After it has been applied, gently peel the layer of glue away. It’s important to know that if it is on your skin to avoid pulling the layer of glue abruptly, to avoid damaging your skin.

How Did This Glue Help You?

Do you have more intriguing facts about this adhesive or its many uses? If so, share all the details on Super Glue’s Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you!
